About Alfama

This atmospheric and lively area of Lisbon is one of Lisbon's most revered tourists areas, the district of Alfama showcases the best of what Lisbon has to offer in a picture postcard setting. Alfama is a maze of winding back lanes which are decorated on both sides by the best examples of Moorish, Roman, and Arabic architecture left in Lisbon. This is the cultural heart of Portugal's capital and visitors will be rewarded with an immersion into old and modern day Portuguese life.

Lisbon CathedralWhat to See in Alfama

CPart of the attraction to a neighborhood like Alfama is being able to explore its dainty streets, squares, churches, shops, and restaurants without any real itinerary set out. Alfama is set between Castelo de Sao Jorge and the Tejo River, both great places to stop by on your way in and out of the district. While exploring the district, take the time to stop off at Lisbon's oldest building, Lisbon Cathedral, with its bell towers, stain glass windows and Romanesque interior.

Portuguese Entertainment

Alfama is where traditional Portuguese music, Fado, was born and still lives. The district is home to some of Lisbon's most popular and inviting fado bars. Guests huddle round a table, fill up a glass and listen to the haunting tones of Portuguese singers lamenting the heartache of a lost love and of harder times. Parreirinha de Alfama is considered one of the best places to see fado artists perform. It is right next door to the Museo de Fado where you can learn all about the enchanting history of this traditional style of Portuguese music.

Alfama TramGetting Around

Alfama is a hilly district that can be hard work on the legs if you intend to do a lot of wandering and sightseeing. The best way to get around is to ride on one of the district's trams. They are cheap and will get you to the highest points of the neighborhood so you can make your own way back down, stopping off on the way. Tram 28 is a tourist attraction in its own right and winds through the narrow streets of Alfama effortlessly.

Eating and Drinking

You will be spoilt for choice for places to eat and drink in Alfama. Around every corner is another family café or restaurant. The best way to find somewhere to eat in Alfama is to follow your nose and choose somewhere that has patrons spilling out of the doors. If the diners look mainly Portuguese, you are on to a winner.
